WHAT INGREDIENTS YOU NEED TO MAKE REINDEER FOOD:
- 3 cups Rice Chex Mix Cereal
- 3 cups Corn Chex Mix Cereal
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- ยผ teaspoon sea salt
- 1 cup powdered sugar
If you can’t have peanut butter or don’t want to serve peanut butter to a crowd due to allergies, there are a variety of nut butters that work great in this recipe, including almond butter, vanilla almond butter, maple almond butter, cashew butter, sunflower butter. When giving this snack mix as a gift to teachers, it may be best to omit the peanut butter and use a more allergen friendly nut butter like sun butter. Tahini (sesame paste) will work in a pinch as well, but it isn’t sweet so you’ll want to add two tablespoons of maple syrup to the recipe. Once the mixture is coated in powdered sugar, it won’t remain sticky. Adding a recipe card to the gift is a good way to let the person you’re giving the snack mix as a gift to know what ingredients are in it so they know it’s allergy friendly. Please also keep in mind that rice and corn Chex are gluten free, but wheat Chex is not gluten free.
Peanut butter Chex, cinnamon Chex, and chocolate Chex are great additions to the recipe to add more flavor. Using a mixture of Chex cereals rather than just one kind gives more dimension to the flavors of this sweet and salty Christmas Chex mix.
