best gluten free breads

Let’s face it, gluten free bread is NOT the same as regular bread. It’s missing it’s binding ingredient, aka the gluten, so it doesn’t have the same texture and can crumble apart while you’re eating. But there are some gluten free breads out there that taste delicious and have a good texture. Below, I have listed the Best Gluten Free Bread Brands of 2022, and their best bread products.

I’ve tried countless gluten free breads, and I’ve tried many of them on my gluten-loving family members to get honest, unbiased opinions, and the ones listed in this post, are the ones that passed the taste and texture test.

I’ve moved around a lot, and most of these brands can be found in regular grocery stores across the US.

So let’s get to the brands!

CARBONAUT

When I first posted this Gluten Free Bread Guide, I added it to two gluten free Facebook groups for feedback. Everyone agreed with my recommendations but told me to give Carbonaut a try and add it to the list, so I did just that, and let me tell y’all, this is hands down the best gluten free bread on the market! I went to Whole Foods and picked up a loaf of Gluten Free Carbonaut white bread. It comes frozen, so I placed two slices on a paper towel on my counter for about 30 or 45 minutes so they could thaw. Once the bread was thawed, I touched it to see how the texture felt, and it felt exactly like regular white bread! I even went back to look at the package to make sure it said Gluten Free since Carbonaut also makes bread with wheat! I used it to make a ham and cheese sandwich, and my mind was blown. For the first time since gluten sensitivity forced me to give up gluten more than six years ago, I felt “normal.”

This bread has the same taste and texture as regular white bread. My gluten-loving hubby tried it and said that’s the only bread I should buy from now on because it’s that good! I had sandwiches two nights in a row because this bread is so delicious! It doesn’t crumble at all and feels super soft. It’s the only gluten free sandwich bread I’ve found that doesn’t need to be toasted at all.

So if you’re looking for a gluten free bread that tastes like real bread, head to Whole Foods and pick up a loaf of Gluten Free Carbonaut bread! Oh, and it’s keto friendly too!

SCHAR

Schar has several shelf-stable bread products, and many of them are delicious! Some, however, are not. When it comes to Schar, you can’t go wrong with Ciabatta Rolls, Sandwich Rolls, Hotdog Buns, Hamburger Buns, or Sourdough. But the loaves of bread are thick and crumbly, in my opinion, compared to other brands. I use the sandwich rolls for both hot and cold subs. They are also great for making garlic bread. Just add some butter and garlic salt to each half, leave it open-faced, and pop it under your oven broiler until it becomes golden brown. The hot dog buns and ciabatta rolls are great for this as well.

Use the ciabatta rolls as sandwich buns, hamburger buns, garlic bread, or dinner rolls. They have a fluffy texture and don’t need to be toasted like some gluten free breads do.

If you love avocado toast, try it with the Sourdough deli style bread. The slices are large and taste great when toasted.

If you can get your hands on a Schar Rustic Loaf, warm it in the oven, hollow out the center, and tear the bread you removed into bite-sized pieces. Fill the bread bowl you’ve just created with Spinach Artichoke Dip and use the bite-sized pieces of bread for dipping! It’s also great for dipping in herb-infused oil.

Schar baguettes are good for bruschetta, crostini, making croutons, and making garlic bread. Or just spread some butter on a warm slice to eat with your dinner.

Firehouse Subs has the best gluten free sandwich around, and they use bread sourced from Schar for their gluten free subs.

CANYON BAKEHOUSE

Canyon Bakehouse is one of my top gluten free bread brands! They have a variety of frozen and shelf-stable breads that taste similar to “real bread.” The bagels are better than regular bagels and toast up nicely. The shelf-stable breads don’t need to be toasted, but I prefer to toast the frozen ones to get rid of the gummy texture created by the thawing process.

The sliced bread comes in a variety of flavors, including Heritage Honey White, Hawaiian Sweet, Multigrain, and Ancient Grain.

The Sub Rolls, Brioche-Style Sweet Rolls, and Hamburger Buns are also great options. The Canyon Bakehouse website has a store locator so you can find these delicious products in a store near you!

BFREE

This brand is amazing! The brown seeded loaf is one of my favorite gluten free breads! When warmed in the oven or lightly toasted, it tastes exactly like regular bread. I eat this one a lot!

The pita bread is fantastic! I use it for many things, including toasting it and dipping it in hummus. It’s great stuffed with chicken salad or Caesar salad or served alongside a Mediterranean bowl too.

The soft white dinner rolls are perfect for sliders and little ham and cheese sandwiches. They also taste great warmed in the oven and slathered with butter.

UDI’S

Udi’s is a household name in gluten free foods, and especially when it comes to breads. They have several varieties, including sandwich bread, hamburger buns, hot dog buns, baguettes, dinner rolls, English muffins, and bagels.

Many restaurants offer Udi’s gluten free bread, including First Watch and Jason’s Deli. If a restaurant offers gluten free bread, chances are it’s Udi’s brand. Some hospital cafeterias even carry it. Red Robin uses Udi’s gluten free buns for their gluten free burgers, and Jersey Mike’s uses bread from Udi’s for their gluten free subs. While many of their bread items crumble apart while you’re eating, the flavors are so good you keep going back for more!

RUDI’s

One of those brands you’re not really sure about until you actually try it! Rudi’s bread is frozen and makes delicious toast. It does crumble fairly easily, but the flavor is great.

AGAINST THE GRAIN

For baguettes to use for crostini, bruschetta, garlic bread, dipping in herb-infused oil, or making croutons, head to the freezer section and pick up a two-pack of Against the Grain baguettes.

ENER-G

This is the only brand I know of that has Texas toast, and it’s great for making French Toast. It also make a delicious buttery garlic toast.

The hamburger buns have a decent taste and texture too, but they definitely taste best when lightly toasted.

GLUTINO

If you want an English Muffin, Glutino is the brand to grab! If I’m being honest, Glutino isn’t my favorite gluten free brand. I feel like many of their products are subpar when compared to other gluten free brands, but they nailed the English Muffin! Find it in your grocery’s freezer section.

KINNIKINNICK

For a hamburger bun, these are pretty good, and sometimes they are the only ones I can find in my local grocery store. Give them a light toast, and they don’t crumble when you’re eating your burger!

TRADER JOE’S

I wasn’t sure if I should include TJ’s in this list since it isn’t available everywhere, but if you do live near a Trader Joe’s, their gluten free bread items are worth a try! The cinnamon raisin bread is a favorite for making French Toast and buttered toast.
