Tips For Traveling With Severe Food Allergies

Traveling with severe food allergies is a terrifying challenge. You have to be on your guard at all times, and that can take away from the relaxing vacation you were seeking.
My son’s egg allergy is still very new to us, and we just took our first trip since his reaction. I was terrified, but I did my research and we had a great trip without incident! When doing research for our trip, I came across the AllergyEats website and app. It made a huge difference in planning.
With the AllergyEats app, you can select which allergens you wish to avoid and it will give you a list of restaurants that can accommodate you. They are in order by rating starting with the highest. Many people write reviews that are helpful in knowing which restaurants you can eat at that don’t have an online allergen menu. Thanks to this app, we were able to eat at a great little place in Bethany Beach. They didn’t have an allergen menu, but the manager was incredibly knowledgable about different allergens. I was able to eat gluten free and Shane was able to eat egg free! They had a lot of options too! I got to eat a crab cake for the first time because theirs are gluten free! I never would have known by looking at the menu, so it’s great that the app told me about the manager and his vast knowledge of food allergens.
We drove through multiple states during our trip and the AllergyEats app helped us locate safe restaurants in the smallest towns, even local restaurants! Many chain restaurants have allergen menus online with several options for patrons with restrictions.
Here are a few of the restaurants I have come across with online allergen menus:
- Longhorn Steakhouse
- Panera Bread
- McDonald’s
- Red Robin
- Shake Shack
- QDoba
- Chipotle
- Grotto Pizza
- Burger King
- White Castle
- iHop
- Olive Garden
- Chili’s
- Ruby Tuesday
- Red Robin
I hope these tips help you when traveling with severe food allergies so you can relax and enjoy your trip!
