Grey Stuff Cupcakes (Gluten Free) | Inspired by Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

“Try the grey stuff, it’s delicious!” If you’ve ever watched Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, you probably sang that line right along with Lumière. While there are countless Grey Stuff recipes floating around the internet (and even served at Disney parks!), we wanted to create something a little different.
Instead of serving the classic Grey Stuff as a pudding-like dessert, we transformed it into a fluffy cookies and cream buttercream frosting piled high on gluten free cupcakes. The result? A magical Disney-inspired dessert that’s beautiful enough for a princess party, movie night, birthday celebration, or just because.
We made half of our cupcakes with gluten free vanilla cake mix and the other half with gluten free chocolate cake mix, and honestly…we couldn’t decide which was better. The creamy Oreo buttercream pairs perfectly with both!
Best of all, the Grey Stuff frosting comes together with just 4 simple ingredients (plus optional vanilla extract) and takes only minutes to make.
Why You’ll Love These Grey Stuff Cupcakes
- Gluten free and incredibly easy
- Only 4 ingredients for the frosting
- Starts with a boxed cake mix
- Perfect for Disney movie nights
- Great for birthdays and themed parties
- Kids absolutely love helping decorate these cupcakes
- Vanilla and chocolate both taste amazing!
What Is Grey Stuff?
Disney fans know the Grey Stuff from the famous song “Be Our Guest.”
The Disney parks have created several versions over the years, but most include pudding, whipped topping, and crushed cookies.
Our version keeps the famous cookies and cream flavor while turning it into a rich buttercream frosting that looks elegant piped onto cupcakes.
It’s basically the ultimate Oreo buttercream!

Grey Stuff Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 20 gluten free Oreo cookies, crushed into fine crumbs
- 3–4 tablespoons heavy cream
Optional:
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
No heavy cream? No problem! Milk or your favorite coffee creamer works just as well.

How to Make Grey Stuff Frosting
Step 1
Beat the softened butter until smooth and fluffy.
Step 2
Gradually mix in the powdered sugar until combined.
Step 3
Add the crushed gluten free Oreos.
Step 4
Mix in the heavy cream (or milk or coffee creamer) one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.
Step 5
If using, mix in the vanilla extract.
Step 6
Transfer the frosting to a piping bag fitted with a large open star piping tip and frost the cooled cupcakes.
Decorating Tips
The easiest way to make these cupcakes look like they came straight from a Disney bakery is using a large open star piping tip.
Pipe one continuous swirl starting around the outside edge of the cupcake and finish in the center for that beautiful bakery-style look.
You can even sprinkle a few extra crushed gluten free Oreo crumbs over the top for even more cookies and cream flavor.
Which Cake Flavor Is Best?
We honestly couldn’t pick a favorite!
Vanilla Cupcakes
The vanilla cake lets the cookies and cream frosting shine and tastes similar to cookies and cream ice cream.
Chocolate Cupcakes
Chocolate lovers will appreciate the rich Oreo flavor paired with chocolate cake. Think of it like the ultimate Oreo cupcake.
If you’re serving a crowd, make both!
Tips for Success
- Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
- Crush the Oreos finely so they pipe smoothly.
- If your frosting is too thick, add another tablespoon of cream.
- If it’s too soft, add a little more powdered sugar.
- Use room-temperature butter for the fluffiest frosting.
- Store frosted cupcakes in the refrigerator if your kitchen is warm.

Storage
Store cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Bring them to room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving for the creamiest frosting.
