Grocery prices are on the rise, and having budget-friendly meals at your fingertips is a game changer. This Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe Recipe feeds 4 people for under $30. It costs even less when you use ingredients you already have on hand!

My hubby grew up in south Philly, so he’s kind of an expert in Philly cheesesteaks. That being said, he asks for this Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe Recipe on repeat! In less than 20 minutes, you too can have a Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe that tastes amazing and will remind you of a cheesesteak without having to travel to Philly!

These Philly cheesesteak sloppy joes are a fun twist on both a classic sloppy joes recipe and a Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Once you try this recipe, it’s going to become one of your favorite comfort-food sandwiches, especially since it’s easy to make and will feed your whole family (family of 4) for under $30.

INGREDIENTS:

Meat: Lean ground beef and lean ground sirloin are the best meats (in my opinion) for this Philly Cheesesteak Recipe, but you can use ground turkey or even ground chicken if you want. 80/20 beef is a low-cost alternative if you’re ballin’ on a budget, just make sure to drain the fat before adding the rest of the ingredients.

Bell peppers: Green pepper is authentic, but red, orange, and yellow peppers work as well, so use what you have on hand.

Onion: Don’t skip this ingredient! One small yellow onion has a nice mild flavor for this dish. I don’t recommend red onion as it will overpower the dish.

Worcestershire sauce: While it may be the most difficult condiment to say, its flavor can’t be beat and is crucial to this Philly cheese steak sloppy Joe recipe. If you don’t have Worcestershire on hand and you’re trying to save a little money, steak sauce is a great substitute.

Mayo: The first time I made this recipe, it was delicious, but it wasn’t “sloppy” enough. I knew right away that mayo was the missing ingredient, and I was right!

Cheese: Ooey gooey melted cheese is what makes this one of the best sloppy joes you’ll ever eat. Any white cheese will work, but my favorites are Monterey Jack, mozzarella cheese, a few slices provolone cheese, and white American cheese. Cheez whiz is a classic ingredient in a cheesesteak sandwich, but when mixed in with the sloppy joe mixture, it doesn’t give the right melty cheese consistency.

Ketchup: Most households have ketchup on hand, so use whatever kind you have in your fridge.

Dijon Mustard: If you only have yellow mustard in your fridge and don’t want to buy dijon, that’s fine! Just make sure to use half the amount if using yellow mustard because it’s a little bit tangier than dijon is.

Salt: I use 1/2 teaspoon for this recipe, but everyone has a different preference when it comes to salt, so it’s best to salt it at the end to taste. Remember, when adding salt to a dish, it’s best practice to start with a small amount and increase gradually as needed. You can always add more salt, but you can’t take it away if you add too much.

Buns: The best way to serve these sloppy joes is on a bun! Whether you use hot dog buns, hamburger buns, fancy brioche buns, or even slices of bread, it’s all up to personal preference here. I use Schar gluten free ciabatta rolls and slice them in half to make a bun.

How to serve:

Traditional sloppy joes are served on a bun, and so are these cheesesteak sloppy joes! For a list of my favorite gluten free breads, including buns, click here. Hamburger and hot dog buns are the most economical options.

Serve on a lettuce bun for a low carb option.

This recipe pairs well with potato salad, potato chips, tater tots, and French fries. We’re talking serious comfort food here!

How to make this sloppy joes Philly cheesesteak recipe:

  1. Spray a large skillet with cooking spray (I use avocado oil spray) or use olive oil, and add ground beef, peppers, and onions. Sauté over medium-high heat until veggies are soft and meat is browned through. If using a fattier beef, drain the fat and return the meat mixture to the pan.
  2. Reduce heat to low and stir in mayo, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and shredded cheese. Stir to combine and let the cheese melt for 3-4 minutes.
  3. Season with salt to taste and serve by placing your bottom bun on a plate, piling the beef mixture onto the bottom bun, and placing the top bun on top of the sloppy joe meat.

Slow Cooker Instructions:

This is a super simple recipe to make as is, but if you’re pressed for time, add ground beef to a slow cooker or crockpot and let it cook all day while you’re at work. Set the slow cooker to low heat for 6 hours. When you get home, add the rest of the ingredients (minus the buns) and allow to cook on low heat for another 30 minutes to 1 hour. Serve the sloppy joe meat on buns and enjoy.
